For a hundred and fifty years, America has wanted the world's biggest island. It has never been for sale. But why is Greenland Danish at all? Because of a treaty about Norway, and a few words in brackets. From the first Inuit hunters and Erik the Red's famous sales pitch, to the lost Norse of Hvalsey, Hans Egede's colony, the Treaty of Kiel in 1814, America's 1916 promise, Norway's "no difficulties", the 1931 occupation of East Greenland and the 1933 judgment in The Hague, the envoy who handed Greenland's defence to the US in 1941, the secret 1946 offer, Thule, the 1953 relocation, Camp Century, the 1968 crash, home rule, leaving the EEC over fish, the 2009 right to independence, and the defence deal signed in 2026. Brackets, a polite sentence, or a rogue envoy: which one mattered most? One word in the comments.
