About Sati Devi:
Sati Devi was a singer of her time. She was the mother of Bengali singer and actress Ruma Guha Thakurta (first wife of Kishore Kumar) and the elder sister of Bijoya Ray, wife of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Sati Devi was also associated with Uday Shankar's cultural circle and Prithvi Theatre.
Her recording offers a fascinating glimpse into the early history of recorded devotional music in India, when gramophone records helped preserve musical traditions for generations to come.
Meaning of the bhajan:
“मने चाकर राखो जी” is a prayer to Shyam, or Krishna:
O Shyam, keep me as Your servant.
Meerabai expresses her longing to serve Krishna, behold Him, remember His name, and devote her life entirely to Him. The song reflects the deep humility, surrender and personal devotion that characterise the Bhakti tradition.
About this archival transfer:
This is a transfer from an original shellac record, not a modern studio restoration. The recording retains the characteristic sound of a nearly century-old disc, including surface noise, clicks, crackle, occasional groove wear and other imperfections.
The intention is to preserve the historical character of the original recording rather than make it sound like a modern studio production.
About Dhoosar Smriti (धूसर स्मृति):
Dhoosar Smriti means “Faded Memories.”
This channel is dedicated to preserving and sharing rare and forgotten recordings from India's musical past, particularly songs surviving on fragile shellac records. Many of these recordings belong to an era that predates modern recording technology, and some are exceptionally difficult to find in the digital domain.
