In the Libyan Sahara sits a walled city built on two levels: streets for men below, and an entire second city of rooftop lanes above that belonged only to women, who could cross the whole town without ever touching the ground. This is Ghadames, kept cool by mud walls and covered lanes centuries before air conditioning existed, its houses filled with mirrors and copper brought by caravans crossing the desert for a thousand years. It was all built around a single spring, and when that spring began to fail in the 1980s, the entire population walked away in one generation. Along the way there's a night in the dunes where three countries are visible at once, a bombing scar from World War Two never repaired, and a car accident on the sand that very nearly ended the trip. And there's a roof, where a stranger with a drone bag learns exactly why the city was designed to be a maze. FOOTAGE Internet Archive — News of the Day (United States. Department of Defense.
