There is a plaque in a San Juan hotel that names the exact bartender and year the pina colada was born, and the government of Puerto Rico stands behind it. But the name piña colada was already appearing in Havana newspapers more than thirty years earlier, describing a frothy pineapple drink with no coconut at all. This video traces that name from 1920s Havana soda fountains through a 1950 Cuban recipe combining rum, pineapple and coconut milk, into a Puerto Rican pirate legend with no evidence behind it, and finally to the real turning point: a 1948 invention called Coco Lopez that made a thick, creamy version possible. It walks through the rival claims inside and outside the Caribe Hilton, compares the old Havana-style drink to the modern one side by side, and explains why the Cuban origin quietly disappeared after 1959. You'll come away knowing which parts of the famous story are documented, which are folklore, and why both the name and the drink you know today have two very different birthplaces.
