In this video, I break down how diagnostic testing can actually teach you medicine rather than simply give you another list of values to memorize. I use troponins and myocardial ischemia to show how a laboratory result connects all the way back to cellular injury, then trace the evolution of heart failure testing from the physical exam and chest X-ray through echocardiography, ejection fraction, BNP, strain imaging, and cardiac MRI. I also look at the crucial difference between structural and functional abnormalities using coronary disease, renal artery disease, COPD, pulmonary function testing, and CT imaging. My goal is to help medical students build the kind of clinical reasoning that lets you understand what a test is measuring, why it changes in disease, and how that information should change the way you think about pathophysiology and patient care.
