In 1939, American engineers created one of the most ambitious exploration vehicles ever built: the Antarctic Snow Cruiser.
Nearly 56 feet long, equipped with enormous ten-foot tires, living quarters, a laboratory and even an aircraft on its roof, it was designed to transport scientists thousands of miles across Antarctica.
But when the giant machine finally reached the ice, its tires began spinning—and the vehicle built specifically for Antarctica could barely move.
This is the true story of Thomas Poulter’s Antarctic Snow Cruiser: its rushed construction, disastrous journey, desperate attempts to save it and mysterious disappearance beneath the ice.
