Melbourne puts on a dazzling night-time welcome for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1954. This footage captures the city after dark: glowing neon signs, royal illuminations and familiar streets and landmarks in a different light.
Take a tour through Swanston Street and Bourke Street, past Flinders Street Station and the Yarra River, out to St Kilda, and through Carlton Gardens, where the Exhibition Fountain stands before the Royal Exhibition Building. Some lights were arranged for the royal visit; others belonged to the everyday businesses that lit up Melbourne’s nights.
A glimpse of Melbourne at its grandest—and after dark.
