📜 Description
Japan, between 1760 and 1850 — the century when ordinary people started travelling for its own sake, and printmakers followed them onto the road. The style is called ukiyo-e. Two hours of original piano, set on
a wooden bridge where a sudden summer rain has just begun.
🎹 About the music
This era's music travelled the same roads as its prints. Jiuta and sokyoku — songs and instrumental pieces for koto and shamisen — were
carried from town to town by touring musicians, the same routes the
print artists walked to sketch famous views. What the prints did with a
few flat planes of colour, this music does with a five-note scale and a
lot of space: single tones left to fade, a plucked, unhurried quality,
phrases that turn and repeat rather than building toward a climax. The
instrument is a piano; the grammar belongs to the road.
✒️ Story Note
The rain came on fast, the way it does in summer, and everyone on the
bridge is hurrying now, umbrellas tilted against it. Below, a ferryman
poles his boat through the arch, in no more hurry than the rain will
allow. By the time it clears, someone will have reached the teahouse
up the road — tea already poured, steam still rising, a porter's pack
left leaning against a post while its owner catches their breath. Later
the sky opens wide and orange over the river, a willow hanging into the
water, and the day ends the way most days on this road end: further
along than it started, and no particular hurry to stop.
