Osaka Castle, 1614. The most heavily fortified stronghold in Japan, home of Toyotomi Hideyori, the last blood challenge to Tokugawa Ieyasu's absolute rule. Two hundred thousand Tokugawa troops surround it in winter. A truce is negotiated. Under its cover, Tokugawa's men fill the outer moat — the castle's primary defence — with earth, leaving it naked before the summer comes. When Tokugawa attacks again in 1615, the ronin from across Japan who gathered to make their final stand have nowhere left to hide. Toyotomi Hideyori and his mother commit seppuku as the castle falls. The Toyotomi clan is extinguished in a single summer. With Toyotomi Hideyori's seppuku, the last blood challenge to Tokugawa rule died inside Osaka Castle. The dynasty was sealed before the ash had settled. Tokugawa Ieyasu dies the following year. What Sekigahara began in one day, Osaka finished in two sieges across two seasons. The 265 years of Tokugawa rule that followed had no more challengers. The dynasty was complete.
