Most Beginner Hikers Start Too Big

Most beginner hikers make the same mistake on their first mountain hike: they start too big. I'm Matti, one of the guides behind Jokkmokkguiderna. My partner Stina and I have been guiding in Swedish Lapland for more than 30 years — kayaking, dog sledding, and hiking in the Sarek and Kungsleden area. After more than 30 years as a wilderness guide, I've come to believe that the best way to start hiking in the mountains is usually much simpler than people think. Longer distances, heavier backpacks, and overly ambitious plans can easily take away the enjoyment — especially on a first trip. In this video I'm guiding day hikes from Saltoluokta Mountain Station, sharing why shorter hikes can teach you more than pushing yourself too hard on your first trip. Along the way I explain some of the small things I look for as a guide — weather, pace, terrain, and the subtle signs that help make a day in the mountains both safer and more enjoyable.
