The Maldives has reached a major milestone in its biggest infrastructure project, with the final bridge segment connecting the capital Malé with neighbouring Villingili officially installed. The Greater Malé Connectivity Project, also known as the Thilamalé Bridge, is now more than 75 percent complete.
Backed by $500 million in Indian financing, the 6.74-kilometre connectivity network will link Malé with Villingili, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi through bridges, marine viaducts and roads. Indian infrastructure company Afcons Infrastructure is executing the project.
The massive project is expected to transform transportation across the Greater Malé region, where residents currently rely heavily on boats for inter-island travel. It could also ease congestion in densely populated Malé, improve access to Thilafushi’s industrial zone and connect the planned port at Gulhifalhu.
Maldivian officials have hailed the project as a flagship example of Maldives-India cooperation, while Indian officials described the latest construction milestone as bringing seamless island connectivity one step closer. The project could become a major economic catalyst while strengthening India’s infrastructure partnership with the Maldives.
