What does God’s love really look like?
Our culture often defines love as approval, affirmation, tolerance, emotional comfort, or simply giving people what they want. But when we distort love, we also distort our view of God.
1 John 4:7–12 gives us a clearer picture.
1. LOVE ORIGINATES IN GOD
“Love comes from God… because God is love.”
God doesn’t simply have love—love is rooted in who He is. His justice, mercy, discipline, and grace flow from His character. God’s love is not selfish or conditional. It pursues the genuine good of another.
2. GOD’S LOVE DEMONSTRATES ITSELF THROUGH CHRIST
“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son…”
God didn’t merely say He loves us. He showed it. Jesus came into our brokenness, took the penalty for our sins, and gave His life so that we might live through Him.
The cross shows both the seriousness of our sin and the immeasurable greatness of God’s love.
3. GOD’S LOVE COMPELS US TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER
“Since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
Loved people become loving people.
We don’t love others because they always deserve it. We love because we have already received undeserved love from God. His love changes how we respond to offenses, how we treat people, and how we live in community.
God’s love is not merely something we receive—it is something that becomes visible through our lives.
The more truly we understand God’s love, the more freely we can give it away.
