The parking lot, the sign over the door, and the smell on the other side. Forty stops from the eighties that every American family knew, and what became of them.
This is a countdown of forty national chains and mall stops: the pretzel counter, the shoe store with the fitting stool, the camera shop, the record store, the booth in the parking lot, and the five-and-dime. Some closed for good, some changed their signs, and some live on only as a name. All of them were part of an ordinary Saturday.
Which one would you walk into one more time, and who was standing next to you when you did? Tell me in the comments.
