Mainwaring, who has spent considerable energy projecting an image of solid, respectable authority, finds that image considerably harder to maintain when the books don't balance and the wrong people are watching. Wilson, naturally, navigates the whole affair with that maddening, effortless composure that has been silently infuriating Mainwaring since the very first episode. Jones offers financial advice that nobody requested and everyone immediately regrets. Pike manages to make things worse in a way that is both entirely predictable and somehow still surprising. And somewhere between the ledgers and the parade ground, Dad's Army once again finds the human comedy hiding inside an apparently straightforward situation — warm, sharp, and completely timeless.
