But for years, once construction was complete, local residents saw little employment or income from the industry growing around them. Responsible tourism changed that equation in a way that is now studied as a model across Kerala. Hotels began facilitating direct village experiences for tourists, locals were trained into skilled workers, and residents started selling their own produce directly to visitors. Tax revenue from tourism establishments became a steady income stream for the panchayat, which channelled it back into public infrastructure, transport, and sanitation.
