How did anyone get a loan when charging interest was a sin? By making sure the return was never called interest.
Christian and Islamic law both condemned usury, and credit grew regardless. Exchange contracts hid a lender's profit inside a currency rate. Partnership agreements shared profit rather than charging a fee. Pawn banks lent against goods held in deposit. Communities barred from other trades were pushed into the one everybody needed and nobody wanted to name.
This documentary explores usury bans, exchange contracts, profit sharing partnerships, pawn banks, merchant credit and the medieval workarounds that built modern lending.
You will also see who was allowed to lend, who was blamed for it, and how the rules changed once the money became too useful to forbid.
From the debates of canon lawyers to the counters of money changers, discover how credit survived the ban.
