In the library of Nineveh, King Ashurbanipal orders the aged scholar Nabu-ahe-eriba to find out whether the spirits of written characters really exist. The old man stares at a single clay tablet day after day, until the familiar cuneiform signs fall apart before his eyes into meaningless lines. And the more he studies the people who have learned to read and write, the stranger they seem.
This is “The Calamity of Writing” (「文字禍」), a short story by Atsushi Nakajima (1909–1942), first published in 1942. Japan Lit Lantern reads it aloud in a new English translation. The date line at the end of the Japanese text is not read aloud. The story mixes ancient Assyrian history with the author’s own invention, and contains brief descriptions of ancient cruelty and a violent death.
