In 1945, Britain won the war — but lost everything else. The nation that stood alone against Hitler, that held the line when every other European power collapsed, emerged from World War II technically bankrupt. National debt had exploded to 250% of GDP. Exports had collapsed. Foreign assets had been liquidated. And the empire that once ruled a quarter of the globe was bleeding money it didn't have. Then, without warning, President Truman cut off Lend-Lease — the lifeline that had kept Britain alive. Within weeks, the country couldn't afford to feed its own people. Prime Minister Attlee sent the dying economist John Maynard Keynes to Washington to beg for help. Keynes expected a gift, recognition of Britain's wartime sacrifice. What he got instead was a business deal — one designed to dismantle the British Empire from the inside out. The 1946 Anglo-American Loan wasn't charity. It was a purchase agreement. In exchange for $3.75 billion, Britain was forced to make the pound convertible into dollars, tear down Imperial Preference, and open its colonial markets to American competition. The result was the 1947 sterling crisis, the collapse of the pound's credibility, the acceleration of Indian independence, Britain's withdrawal from Greece and Turkey, and the humiliation of Suez a decade later. This is the story of how the most powerful empire in history was brought to its knees — not by revolution or military defeat, but by a wire transfer and the fine print of a loan agreement. The final payment wasn't made until 2006. The country that controls the checkbook controls the future. America understood that. Britain learned it the hard way.
