In January 1914, the Karluk was crushed by Arctic ice and sank, leaving 25 people — including an Inuit family with two little girls — on the frozen Chukchi Sea. Their expedition leader had left the ship months earlier. This is the true story of how Captain Robert Bartlett led them to Wrangel Island, then walked about 700 miles across the ice to bring help.
The Karluk expedition left Alaska in 1913 as part of the Canadian Arctic Expedition. When the ship of the Karluk expedition was crushed by ice, Captain Robert Bartlett became the only hope of 25 people. This true survival story follows the Karluk expedition from Shipwreck Camp to Wrangel Island and Bartlett's walk of about 700 miles. Of the 25 people on the Karluk expedition's last voyage, 14 survived. Bartlett told this true survival story himself in his 1916 book on the Karluk expedition.

Some details remain uncertain: the exact causes of the deaths on Wrangel Island, and whether George Breddy's death was an accident. Stefansson's decision not to return to the ship is still debated.
