There is a gallon of white vinegar under your sink and somebody told you it was the answer. So once a month you pour a cup in, run the machine empty on hot, and three days later your towels still smell like a pond.
In this video I show you what that vinegar is actually doing in there — and what it is not. Vinegar is a weak acid. Against hard-water scale it genuinely works, and that is where the whole idea came from. Against the thing that is actually making your washer stink it does very little, because that thing is a biofilm living in the fold of the door seal behind a slime roof that a cup of water runs straight past. And against the rubber parts of your own machine, month after month for years, it works a little too well — which is why your manual tells you not to.
Then I do the whole job properly: the door seal fold, the detergent drawer that pulls all the way out, the drain pump filter behind the little panel at the bottom that almost nobody has ever opened, and the right hot cycle to finish with. Top-loaders get their own section. I also give vinegar its honest due at the end, because there are two jobs it really is good for.
