St Clement’s Church in Old Romney, on the historic Romney Marsh in Kent, has a rather unusual claim to fame — it was used as a filming location for Walt Disney’s The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh.
In this video, I explore this fascinating medieval church and discover the story behind its famous pink pews, which were painted for the Disney film.
Inside, we take a look at the medieval font, the remains of the old rood screen, an unusual medieval coffin slab, the historic stone altar, prayer boards, an old wooden church chest and the ledger stones set into the floor.
Then we head outside into the churchyard, where the film connection continues in a completely different way. The churchyard is the final resting place of British film director Derek Jarman, who had a strong connection with the Kent landscape.
We’ll also take a look at the old yew tree and the peaceful Romney Marsh churchyard from above.
St Clement’s is a fascinating mixture of medieval history, later Georgian additions, unusual surviving features and some very unexpected connections with the world of film.
Come along with me as I explore another fascinating old English church.
