Lambton Quay, Wellington's busiest street, was a beach in 1840. In 1855 a magnitude 8.2 earthquake lifted the shore by one to two metres, and more than 150 hectares were later reclaimed from the sea — New Zealand's capital is a city that rose out of the sea.
This video flies over a 3D model of Wellington built from real aerial imagery, elevation and LiDAR buildings, always facing north, with 1840s watercolours, old photographs and archive film: where it sits, how it began, how it is laid out, what it lives on, and which of four areas suits whom.
