The Rise and Fall of New Zealand's Most Powerful Gold Town: Thames 1 August 1867: the goldfield opened and 18,000 people came inside a year. Thames wasn't just a gold town — it was where New Zealand's share market began, on a corner where brokers shouted prices into the mud. 693 stamper heads, day and night. But in 1878 the government withdrew its subsidy for the Big Pump. In 1879 the borough and county councils withdrew theirs. The deep levels flooded. In 1890 the pump was dismantled and sold for scrap. Today, 7,212 people live here. Four gold-rush hotels survive out of more than a hundred. In November 2025 a company applied to prospect near the Firth. This is the story of how the water was geology but the pump was a decision, and what a flooded shaft says about who pays. This is not just the story of Thames.
