The 1999 Mazda RX-7 Type RB represents one of the final evolutions of the third-generation FD3S RX-7, produced exclusively for the Japanese domestic market near the end of the model’s production run. Introduced as a tribute to renowned Mazda test driver and motorsport figure Ryuichi Matsuda, the Type RB emphasized driver engagement through lightweight construction, refined suspension tuning, and the unmistakable character of Mazda’s rotary powerplant. By the late 1990s the RX-7 had already earned a global reputation as one of the most balanced and distinctive sports cars of its era.
The RX-7 Type RB is built on Mazda’s lightweight FD chassis, featuring a front-mid-engine layout and near-perfect weight distribution. Its low profile, smooth aerodynamic bodywork, and compact dimensions contribute to both high-speed stability and agile handling. The model includes upgraded suspension components compared with standard versions, along with lightweight wheels and performance-focused tuning designed to sharpen steering response and chassis balance.
At the heart of the car is the 13B-REW rotary engine, a 1.3-liter twin-rotor unit equipped with sequential twin turbochargers. This unique powerplant produces approximately 280 horsepower and around 314 Nm of torque, delivering power through a five-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. The sequential turbo system improves low- and mid-range responsiveness while maintaining strong high-rpm performance, a defining characteristic of the RX-7’s driving experience.
Performance figures reflect the car’s lightweight philosophy. The RX-7 Type RB accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in roughly 5 seconds and reaches a top speed near 250 km/h. More than straight-line performance, the car’s strengths lie in its sharp turn-in, excellent balance, and high cornering grip, supported by a double-wishbone suspension layout at both front and rear.
The 1999 RX-7 Type RB stands as one of the final and most refined expressions of Mazda’s rotary sports car tradition. Combining distinctive engineering with a highly responsive chassis, it remains celebrated among enthusiasts as a pure driver’s machine and a fitting conclusion to the legendary FD3S generation.
