Preparing for the Cross: Final Lessons Before Calvary Lesson 4: The Greatest Commandment As Jesus approaches the cross, the religious leaders continue questioning Him, looking for opportunities to challenge His authority and teaching. Then Jesus is asked one of the most important questions in Scripture: Which is the greatest commandment? Jesus' answer brings the entire Law back to its foundation, love. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” But Jesus does not stop there. He gives a second commandment that cannot be separated from the first: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” In this lesson, we examine what it means to love God completely, not simply through words or religious activity, but with our heart, soul, mind, and strength. We also explore how genuine love for God should change the way we see and treat the people around us. Jesus teaches that these two commandments summarize everything God has been teaching His people. Our relationship with God shapes our relationship with others. Faith is not simply knowing the right answers. It should transform how we love, serve, forgive, and live. As Jesus prepares for the cross, His teaching also points toward what He Himself is about to demonstrate. The cross will become the ultimate expression of love for God and sacrificial love for others. Key themes include: Loving God with our entire being Loving our neighbor as ourselves The relationship between faith, obedience, and love Why religious knowledge alone is not enough Putting God's commandments into practice Loving others as an expression of our love for God Jesus as the ultimate example of sacrificial love Scripture: Matthew 22:34-40 Mark 12:28-34 Luke 10:25-28 Deuteronomy 6:4-5 Leviticus 19:18 Love God completely. Love others faithfully. As we continue Preparing for the Cross, Jesus reminds us that following God is more than outward religion or knowing the right answers. At the heart of genuine faith is a life centered on loving God and allowing that love to shape how we treat others.
