Preparing for the Cross: Final Lessons Before Calvary
Lesson 6: Can We Trust What Jesus Says About the Future?
As Jesus approaches the final days before His crucifixion, He makes an extraordinary prediction about one of the most magnificent and important structures in the ancient world, the Temple in Jerusalem.
The disciples are amazed by the Temple's enormous stones, impressive buildings, and beautiful decorations. To them, this was more than an architectural achievement. The Temple represented the center of Jewish worship, their religious identity, and something that seemed almost impossible to destroy.
Yet Jesus declares:
"Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down." — Matthew 24:2 (NKJV)
Approximately 40 years later, in AD 70, Roman forces under Titus captured Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple, fulfilling the central substance of Jesus' remarkable prediction.
In this lesson, we examine Jesus' prophecy through the accounts of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, considering what His words meant to the disciples and how history confirms the destruction He foretold.
But this lesson raises a much greater question: If Jesus accurately predicted the destruction of something that appeared indestructible, can we trust what He says about our future?
Jesus spoke not only about the destruction of Jerusalem but also about salvation, judgment, eternal life, and His promised return. His fulfilled prophecy challenges us to take His other teachings and promises seriously.
As we continue Preparing for the Cross, we are reminded that Jesus was not simply a teacher offering religious advice. He spoke with divine authority, understood what lay ahead, and willingly continued toward the cross to accomplish God's plan of salvation.
Key themes include:
The importance of the Jerusalem Temple to the Jewish people
The magnificent construction of Herod's Temple
Jesus' extraordinary prediction of the Temple's destruction
The fulfillment of His prophecy in AD 70
Historical evidence supporting the Gospel accounts
Comparing the accounts of Matthew, Mark, and Luke
The difference between what humanity considers permanent and what God knows about the future
Jesus' prophetic authority and the reliability of His words
Why Christ's promises concerning salvation, judgment, and eternal life deserve our attention
Scripture:
Matthew 24:1-2
Mark 13:1-2
Luke 21:5-6
If Jesus accurately predicted the destruction of something that seemed indestructible, should we take His other promises and warnings seriously?
As Jesus prepares for the cross, His words remind us that even the greatest accomplishments of humanity are temporary. Buildings, institutions, and earthly kingdoms may rise and fall, but God's Word remains.
Jesus' prediction of the Temple's destruction provides a powerful historical example of His prophetic authority. It also invites us to examine His other promises, particularly His promise of salvation and eternal life through faith in Him.
