Episode 61 - Every Child Has the Human Right to Learn to Read with Christy Moreno

In Episode 61, I sat down with Christy Moreno, National Organizing Director for The National Parents Union (NPU), Language Access Provider, and Family Advocate, to discuss literacy in our nation’s schools. Literacy is an academic skill and the foundation for everything that happens in school and life. The inability to read closes many doors in life. The ability to read opens doors to learning. Students can gain access, opportunity, and independence. They are fully equipped to think critically, communicate, seek employment, and participate in society. When children do not receive the instruction, resources, intervention, and support they need to become proficient readers, the consequences can extend far beyond the classroom. The essential question for this episode is: If every child has a human right to learn to read, what must we change—NOW—to ensure every child has the access, opportunity, instruction, and support needed to succeed? This conversation will challenge educators, school leaders, families, policymakers, and communities and ask deeper questions about what children experience every day.
