I Rode One of Alaska's Remote Roads Into the Wilderness

Alaska’s McCarthy Road has a reputation—washboard, potholes, loose gravel… the kind of road that makes you question whether you should go at all. I wasn’t completely sure about this one. Riding solo on a DR650 — and still getting used to gravel — I had plenty of reasons NOT to go. But it was the only place in the State of Alaska with sunshine in the weather forecast. So I packed up after work… and went anyway. This ride took me 338 miles across Alaska — from my home in Talkeetna through the Matanuska Valley and into the Copper River Valley — ending deep inside the wilderness of Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The road out of Chitina started rough… loose surface, shifting rock. But somewhere along the way, it changed. Or maybe I did.
