In this ranked Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition match, KnightRushTV plays Vikings vs Hindustanis on Arabia against twf_wing (1450 ELO).
Not every ranked game goes according to plan, and this one is a perfect example of how small Dark Age mistakes can snowball into a losing position.
My opening is plagued by poor food efficiency, with awkward villager movement and less-than-ideal boar luring setting my economy back from the very beginning. By the time I click up to Feudal Age, I'm around 90 seconds behind my normal timing—a huge delay at this level of play.
That slower uptime leaves me completely exposed. Instead of having my usual three Men-at-Arms applying pressure across the map, I'm still trying to stabilize at home when my opponent commits to an aggressive Tower Rush. Arriving late to defend means I'm constantly reacting instead of dictating the pace of the game.
Refusing to give up, I attempt a counter Tower Rush to disrupt the Hindustani economy and claw my way back into the match. For a while, it keeps me in the game, but the early economic damage proves too much to overcome.
The final blow comes in Castle Age, where my opponent follows up with a forward Siege Workshop and relentless pressure. Unable to hold against the combination of towers and siege, my defenses finally collapse, ending a game that slipped away almost entirely because of a difficult Dark Age.
While it's never fun to lose, especially after fighting to recover, matches like this are valuable reminders that Age of Empires II is often decided by the first few minutes. One inefficient start can completely alter the course of a game against a strong opponent.
