It's 3 a.m. A radio telescope picks up a hello from a star 40 light-years away, and there's a big red button on the desk that says REPLY.
Would you press it?
In 1950, Enrico Fermi asked a lunch-table question that still has no answer: if our galaxy is packed with planets, where is everybody? This video follows that question into one of its darkest possible answers, the "dark forest" idea from Liu Cixin's science fiction novel, where everyone stays quiet because being noticed feels dangerous. Along the way we ask a frog what happens when you sing too loudly, look at what Earth has already beamed into space (including a little figure made of dots and a Doritos ad), poke at the biggest cracks in the dark forest logic, and weigh the less dramatic reasons a sky full of life could still sound quiet.
A quick note on what's established and what isn't: no confirmed signal from an alien civilization has ever been detected. The dark forest is a hypothesis that comes from fiction, not a finding, and a quiet sky doesn't prove that anyone is hiding or that aliens would be hostile. In the video, things we've measured are drawn in ink and guesses are drawn in pencil.
