Last weekend, I took a trip down to Carlisle to see LNER Peppercorn Class A1 60163 Tornado! This was the first steam locomotive to visit Carlisle since the beginning of the steam ban enforced by Network Rail during the summer due to a prolonged spell of dry weather. Tornado arrived unassisted and in fine form, and was taken away by 47773 to London Road for turning and servicing. The stock then arrived back roughly 2 hours later, and Tornado would work the return of 'The Great Northern' as far as Darlington. This Vintage Trains excursion was the first time I had seen Tornado on the mainline in 5 years! Tornado is a new build steam locomotive, and was built in Darlington works, with construction starting in the mid-1990's and being completed in 2008. It achieved a record speed of 101.6mph during a test run in 2017. Tornado is the only member of its class to exist, with the original A1's being scrapped in the 1960's. Also included in this video is LNER Diverted services that ran along the Tyne Valley Line due to the closure of the East Coast Mainline between Newcastle and Dunbar, and also Freightliner Class 90's. Avanti and TPE services are also in the video! Filmed at Carlisle station. 26th of September, 2026. Operators featured include: Avanti West Coast. TransPennine Express. LNER. Freightliner.
