Ancient humans were living in Oregon's Paisley Caves more than 14,000 years ago — and it took over 70 years to prove it. This is the story of how the first Americans left pre-Clovis evidence in a dry cave in the high desert. How did humans end up in the Americas, and who came first? For most of the 20th century, the answer was "Clovis First." In 1938, archaeologist Luther Cressman claimed people had lived at Paisley among Ice Age animals. He could not prove it. Then came new excavations, ancient DNA, radiocarbon dating, and a test that looked for human fat in the dust. This archaeology documentary examines the pre-Clovis evidence from Paisley Caves in Oregon: ancient DNA from human coprolites, radiocarbon dating, Western Stemmed points, and why the Clovis First theory no longer stands as it did. If you have ever wondered who the first Americans were and how Ice Age humans reached America, this is one of the cases that changed the answer. In this documentary: Ancient DNA from human coprolites at Paisley Caves (Science, 2008) Why skeptics doubted it — contamination, dogs, and dripping water Western Stemmed points as old as Clovis (Science, 2012) Fecal biomarkers that confirmed pre-Clovis people (Science Advances, 2020) A sewn hide from nearby Cougar Mountain Cave (Science Advances, 2026) Set in Ice Age Oregon, near Fort Rock Cave, where Luther Cressman found sandals woven from sagebrush bark — part of the story of early human migration into the Americas.
