US Canned Tuna Brands to Avoid, Harmful Chemicals, Food Exposure One can of tuna in your supermarket has forty-nine times more mercury than the one right next to it. In November 2025, Mamavation published results from an EPA-certified laboratory for thirty-four tuna products consumers were actually buying. Highest can: seven hundred eighty-eight parts per billion. Lowest can: sixteen. So how does canned tuna end up that far apart? Let’s start with one word on the label. White. Federal law reserves it for albacore — the tuna the FDA says typically carries about three times the mercury of canned light. Albacore grows larger and lives longer than the tuna typically used in canned light, giving mercury more time to accumulate. By the time it reaches the can, what’s in its tissue comes with it. The other label: Light. Light isn’t a species. It’s a color designation. Federal rules let that can say light tuna without naming the tuna species inside. The FDA says it can contain a mix of different tuna species. And now the result that makes that difference impossible to ignore. Number two and the lowest can wear the same brand name. Five hundred thirty-four versus sixteen. Thirty-three times apart. Five cans to put back. Two to reach for.
