✨ October 17 · Saint Ignatius of Antioch: the bishop of Syria who, in chains and condemned to the beasts, begged the Christians of Rome to do nothing to save him. Did you know that the letters of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, written on the road to Rome in the early second century, contain the first time the Church is called "Catholic" in the Christian literature that survives? A bishop in chains, watched by ten soldiers, called himself "the wheat of God" and confessed that he was only beginning to be a disciple. In this video you'll discover: ✉️ What Ignatius asked of the Romans in his letter dated August 23, and why he feared they might free him from death 🐆 Who his "ten leopards" were, and what he wrote from Smyrna, Troas and Philadelphia ⛪ How, in his letter to the Smyrnaeans, he wrote "Where Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church" 🕯️ What tradition remembers of his death in Rome around the year 107, and where his remains rest today, in the Basilica of San Clemente The account of his death in the amphitheater and the transfer of his relics in the year 637 are the Church's living memory; his letters are his own voice. Every October 17, the Mass of his memorial returns to his words: "Frumentum Christi sum", I am the wheat of Christ. We invite you to walk with him the road from Antioch to Rome, and to stay until the prayer that closes the episode. #HistoryOfTheSaints #FidesViva #SaintIgnatiusOfAntioch #SaintOfTheDay #October17 #MartyrsOfTheChurch 📌 Chapters 0:00 Ten Leopards 3:43 A Cry in Philadelphia 6:30 Those Who Hurried to See Him 9:17 Those Who Praise Him Wound Him 11:18 The Wheat of God 15:01 If It Was Only an Appearance 17:59 They Have Reached Harbor 20:54 Sure News 22:57 The Arena of Rome 24:36 Beneath the Altar 📚 Sources and bibliography Primary sources Ignatius of Antioch, Letters to the Ephesians, Trallians, Romans, Philadelphians, Smyrnaeans and to Polycarp; Polycarp of Smyrna, Letter to the Philippians; Eusebius, Church History III; Jerome, De viris illustribus 16; Socrates of Constantinople, Church History VI,8 — newadvent.org/fathers Missale Romanum and Liturgy of the Hours, October 17 — liturgies.net/saints/ignatius/readings.htm Martyrologium Romanum, entry for October 17 Benedict XVI, General Audience of March 14, 2007 — vatican.va Hagiographic sources and tradition Argimiro Velasco Delgado, O.P., San Ignacio de Antioquía, Nuevo Año Cristiano (2026) Documents and studies J.
