Gaslighting is one of the most commonly used words in conversations about relationships and manipulation—but is everything we call “gaslighting” actually gaslighting? In this episode of Drea Reacts, I’m reacting to several conversations about gaslighting, manipulation, blame-shifting, victim reversal, emotional invalidation, boundaries, and learning to trust your own perception. As a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), I also want to add some important nuance to this conversation because gaslighting is real—but not every lie, disagreement, defensive response, hurtful comment, or difference in memory automatically means someone is gaslighting you. So what DOES gaslighting look like? And where is the line between gaslighting and other forms of unhealthy or manipulative behavior? In this reaction, we're discussing: • What gaslighting can look like • Gaslighting vs. manipulation • Gaslighting vs. lying • Blame-shifting and victim reversal • Being told you're “too sensitive” • Questioning your own memory and perception • Seeking clarity from someone who repeatedly creates confusion • Intent vs. impact • Mental-health labels being weaponized during conflict • Why disagreement isn't automatically gaslighting • Group or “collective” manipulation • Boundaries after unhealthy relationship dynamics • Rebuilding trust in your own judgment • Why self-trust doesn't mean assuming you're always right One of my biggest takeaways from this conversation: Gaslighting is manipulation—but not all manipulation is gaslighting. And you don't need to diagnose someone or prove that they're a “gaslighter” before deciding that a repeated behavior isn't healthy for you. Healthy self-trust still leaves room for reflection, accountability, and the possibility that we may sometimes be wrong. The goal isn't to become impossible to question. The goal is to become difficult to manipulate. 💬 QUESTION OF THE DAY: What behavior do you think people commonly call “gaslighting” that actually ISN'T gaslighting? And where do you think the line is between disagreement, manipulation, and actual gaslighting?
