Ethical decisions at work affect careers, wellbeing and trust, so people professionals need a clear framework for making fair and defensible choices. This lesson introduces four core ethical values: democracy, fairness, honesty and equality. It explains how participation can give decisions legitimacy, why transparent criteria support fairness, how honesty should be balanced with sensitivity, and how equality can be challenged by unconscious bias and systemic inequality. The lesson also considers the relationship between ethics and religion, showing how secular approaches can support inclusion and neutrality across a diverse workforce. You will then learn a five-step process: define the problem and identify stakeholders, gather quantitative and qualitative evidence, compare options, apply organisational, professional and legal frameworks, and review the impact. A practical example demonstrates how to use the process when allocating a development opportunity among several team members. The lesson concludes by emphasising that ethical values are essential to trust, resilience and consistent people practice.
