Development Begins In Northwestern Medicine Hospital Campus

September 28, 2026 drone flight Northwestern Medicine is transforming the full city block at 330 E. Erie Street (bounded by Erie, Huron, Fairbanks, and McClurg) into a $1.3 billion, 24-story, 1.2-million-square-foot clinical tower designed by Perkins&Will to centralize the Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and expand cardiovascular, surgical, and neurology services. The site—formerly home to the Lakeside VA Hospital tower until its 2009 demolition—currently requires heavy excavation by a Power Construction/UJAMAA joint venture to remove the original 3-story subterranean VA basement before deep caissons can be driven. Once constructed, the modern tower will feature a landscaped public plaza at Fairbanks and Erie, a covered drop-off loop along Erie Street, a subterranean loading dock and 600-space underground parking garage, a large 4th-floor rooftop garden, skybridge connections to the Feinberg Pavilion and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, and up to 252 single-patient beds, with main core construction kicking off in 2027 toward a target completion in 2031. © 2026 Devodare_Chicago.
