A blazar is what happens when a supermassive black hole fires a relativistic jet of plasma directly at you. It is not a different object from a quasar or a radio galaxy. It is the same machine, the same black hole, the same accretion disk, the same jet. The only difference is angle. And that angle changes everything.
In this video, we break down the full physics of how blazars work, from the Blandford-Znajek process that extracts rotational energy from a spinning black hole, to the relativistic beaming that amplifies a jet's apparent brightness by a factor of over 100,000. We explore what a nearby blazar jet would actually do to Earth's atmosphere, why the ozone layer would be stripped away within months, why the damage would last millions of years, and why there would be no warning. Then we look at the real blazars astronomers have catalogued and monitored, including BL Lacertae, Markarian 421, and 3C 279, and explain why every single one of them is safely, reassuringly far away.
