Bringing to Life an Abandoned Farm in the Mountains: Remote Off-Grid Life

This week on our off grid property in the Carpathian Mountains, we continued working on our 107-year-old abandoned farm and made a little change in the renovation plans. For now, we’ve put the restoration of the old stone barn on hold and started work on the main cabin. We poured and reinforced the foundations for both the house and the cellar, and then began raising the first walls. The cellar will have three separate rooms with doors, plus one open-space area, giving us plenty of practical storage and working space. The main mountain house will be built in a traditional Romanian style, keeping the character of the old mountain homes while using only a few modern elements. We want to preserve the traditional feel of the property and build something that fits naturally into its surroundings. It’s exciting to see the project moving into a new stage. From restoring the old stone barn to now building the foundations and walls of our future mountain home, little by little we’re creating our off grid paradise in the Carpathian Mountains. Another week of hard work, traditional building, and slow progress on our little piece of Romania.
