China's latest semiconductor ambitions are raising a major question: Can the country develop advanced 5nm-class chips without access to the world's most advanced EUV lithography machines?
For years, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography has played a crucial role in manufacturing the most advanced processors. Dutch equipment manufacturer ASML dominates this technology, while export restrictions have limited China's access to EUV machines. But Chinese researchers and semiconductor companies are exploring alternative ways to push chip technology forward.
In this video, we investigate China's efforts to develop advanced chips without relying on EUV lithography. We explain the role of DUV lithography, advanced patterning techniques, next-generation semiconductor materials, and domestic chipmaking equipment in China's strategy to reduce dependence on foreign technology.
We also examine an important new development: Chinese startup Yuanjiwei has reportedly established a pilot production line for two-dimensional semiconductors and aims to develop 5nm-equivalent chips without EUV equipment by 2029. This ambitious target raises important questions about the future of semiconductor manufacturing and China's long-term technology strategy.
But there is a major challenge. Achieving a 5nm-equivalent result is not the same as matching the performance, power efficiency, manufacturing yield, production cost, and output of established advanced chipmakers. Turning a promising research project into reliable, commercially competitive chips requires years of engineering, testing, and manufacturing improvements.
Could China create a different path to advanced chip production? Will alternative technologies reduce its dependence on ASML? And what could these developments mean for Huawei, AI processors, global semiconductor companies, and the wider technology industry?
Watch until the end as we break down the technology, the challenges, and the potential consequences for the global chip race.
