In a major political development in Punjab, three prominent leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including two sitting MLAs, have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The move is being seen as a significant setback for the ruling AAP government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The leaders who joined the BJP are Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, Chetan Singh Jouramajra and former MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh. They formally joined the party at an event held at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi. Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra represents the Sanaur constituency, while Chetan Singh Jouramajra represents Samana. Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh was previously an MLA from Amritsar North. He had been suspended from the AAP in June 2025 over alleged anti-party activities. The political development followed the resignations of Pathanmajra and Jouramajra from the AAP. Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh also resigned as an MLA before joining the BJP. The defections come at a crucial time, as Punjab prepares for the 2027 Assembly elections. The AAP had recently announced its first list of 40 candidates, adding to the political significance of the latest developments. The exits have triggered fresh political discussions over the AAP's organisational strength, internal differences and the BJP's strategy in Punjab. The AAP leadership has also indicated that it may approach the Assembly Speaker regarding disqualification proceedings against the legislators under the anti-defection law.
