Jesus had healed people with a word and with a touch. But in John 9, He spit on the ground, made mud, put it on the man's eyes, and told him to wash in the Pool of Siloam. It seems strangely complicated for someone who did not need mud to perform a miracle. But John does not include these details by accident. The mud becomes connected to a Sabbath controversy. The Pool of Siloam carries a name John deliberately translates as "Sent." And as the healed man begins to understand who Jesus really is, the people who could see all along become increasingly blind to what is happening in front of them. So was the mud connected to ancient healing practices? Was it an echo of creation in Genesis? Why did Jesus choose to do this on the Sabbath? And what can we actually say without turning the passage into a hidden symbolic code? In this video, we follow the evidence in John 9 and separate what the text clearly tells us from interpretations that remain possible. 📖 KEY VERSE John 9:6–7 After saying this, Jesus spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. He then told him to wash in the Pool of Siloam. The man went, washed, and came home seeing. IN THIS VIDEO ▸ Why Jesus used mud instead of simply speaking a word ▸ The overlooked fact that the blind man never asked to be healed ▸ What ancient beliefs about saliva can and cannot explain ▸ The possible connection between the mud and creation in Genesis ▸ Why John tells us that Siloam means "Sent" ▸ Why making the mud on the Sabbath became so controversial ▸ How the healed man's understanding of Jesus changes throughout John 9 ▸ Why the people with physical sight become the ones Jesus confronts about blindness ▸ What John 9 ultimately reveals about seeing Jesus clearly The mud is one of the strangest details in this miracle. But by the end of John 9, the bigger question is no longer simply why Jesus put mud on a blind man's eyes. The question is who could actually see. 💬 What detail in John 9 stands out to you most: the mud, Siloam, the Sabbath controversy, or the blind man's growing understanding of Jesus?
