Railroads are still running EMD SD40-2s and GP38-2s built in the early 1970s. At the end of 2025, CSX's switchers averaged 48 years old and CPKC's yard switchers 52. This is why: what the federal rules say about age, the 645 engine that was built to come apart, the rebuild programs, what a new locomotive costs, California's age limit that never came into force, and where these engines were still at work in 2026. Yes, the narrator is AI. I'm a train fanatic with a voice that would clear a room, so I let a robot read it. Everything else is done by hand: every fact comes from the railroads' own filings, the federal and California rules, Electro-Motive's specifications and manuals, rail historians and the railroad press, and I check every line before it goes up. No invented quotes, no made-up documents, no AI slop. Get something wrong and I'll fix it: tell me in the comments with a source.
