On my way to the cathedral town, I found shelter for the night at a small stone lodge on a mossy path through an old pine forest, kept by an elderly elven forester and his wife. They shared chanterelles seared on the griddle and piled on black bread, and while I carved an oak leaf into my practice stone by lantern light, the rain stopped tapping at the window and a white rime settled on the moss. For quiet nights, until sleep finds you.

📝 About each track
1. Red Bark at Sunset — At dusk, as I climbed the mossy path through the old pine forest, the low sun turned every trunk red at once and the whole wood glowed with warm colour. Where the path reached a gap in the trees, the plain beyond the forest's end lay hazed in gold, and somewhere past that haze was the cathedral town I was walking toward.
2. The Mason's Tool Roll — At the stone lodge halfway along the mossy path, I asked the old elven forester and his wife for a night's shelter, and as I scraped the moss and mud from my boots on the doorstone, the forester's wife handed me a dry cloth. When I wiped the damp from my bundle of chisels and mallet with it, the letter of introduction to the master mason of the cathedral town peeked out from between the tools.
3. Chanterelles on the Griddle — At dusk, as a fine rain began to patter on the leaded window, the forester's wife seared chanterelles on an iron griddle over the hearth while the old man fed in a pine stump, filling the lodge with the sweet smell of resin. The three of us shared the mushrooms piled on black bread, and outside the window only the clouds toward the plain held a faint glow from below.
4. Two Unfinished Towers — In a lull in the rain I climbed the mossy rock behind the lodge, and beyond a dark sea of pines, on the plain where the forest ended, the lights of the cathedral town spread out, with two unfinished towers wrapped in scaffolding silhouetted against the evening sky at its heart. The day after tomorrow, somewhere on that scaffolding, I would be carving stone too.
5. Stone Dust by Lantern — At night a brass lantern was hung for me inside the doorway, and on the palm-sized practice stone I had carried all through my journey I slowly carved, chisel stroke by chisel stroke, the same oak leaf that was on the keystone above the door. Each time I brushed away the white stone dust the veins rose a little clearer, and the forester's wife told me that the stone of this doorway had once been carried up from a quarry on the plain beyond the forest.
6. Rime on the Moss — As the night deepened and the sky cleared, cold air settled quietly down from the pine tops, and a thin white rime began to lie on the mossy path outside the door. I imagined it spreading without a sound past the bend in the path, all the way down the road to the plain beyond the forest.
7. Resin Ticking Low — Late in the night the fire had sunk low, and the resin soaked into the pine stump only ticked softly now and then. Beyond the leaded window the sky had cleared and the stars were out, and the cathedral town on the plain past the forest, unfinished towers and all, must have been lying still beneath the same stars.
8. The Keystone Leaf — After sweeping up the white stone dust inside the doorway, I wrapped myself in a sheepskin by the hearth and lay looking up at the keystone over the door, where the old oak leaf, worn soft by moss and rain, caught a little of the last firelight. With tonight's small carved leaf beside my pillow, I closed my eyes, thinking that in the morning I would follow the mossy path down to the plain.
