Qasr Urwah Bin Zubair, Madinah Al Munawwarah | Explore the Historic Islamic Heritage of Madinah
Have you ever visited a historic place in Madinah Al Munawwarah where ancient stone walls, traditional architecture, and the heritage of early Islamic history come together?
In this video, we visit Qasr Urwah Bin Zubair (قصر عروة بن الزبير), a remarkable historical site located near Wadi Al-Aqiq in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. We explore the historic palace area, walk around its remains, and take a closer look at the ancient stone walls and architectural features that preserve an important part of Madinah’s history.
History of Qasr Urwah Bin Zubair
Qasr Urwah Bin Zubair is associated with Urwah ibn al-Zubair, a renowned Tabi’i, Islamic scholar, and one of the Seven Jurists of Madinah. He was the son of the noble Companion Al-Zubair ibn Al-Awwam (RA), who was among the ten Companions promised Paradise, and Asma bint Abi Bakr (RA).
Historical accounts describe the palace as an estate built near Wadi Al-Aqiq, along the old route connecting Madinah with Makkah and the Miqat of Dhul-Hulayfah. The site is approximately 3.5 kilometres southwest of the Prophet’s Mosque, Masjid an-Nabawi.
The palace is particularly known for its stone foundations, historic walls, interior courtyards, and its connection with the agricultural landscape of Wadi Al-Aqiq. Historical descriptions also mention three wells associated with the estate. Its location along an important travel route made it a place connected with hospitality and generosity.
According to historical accounts, Urwah ibn al-Zubair was known for his generosity. When his date palms ripened, people were allowed to enter his orchard and take dates. Accounts also describe his donation of the estate and its resources for the benefit of Muslims.
The palace is part of Madinah’s early Islamic architectural heritage. Its surviving remains provide a glimpse into the historic buildings, agricultural life, and settlement patterns that developed around Wadi Al-Aqiq during the early Islamic centuries.
