🇬🇾📚 SLATE AND CHALK | Before Tablets, This Was School in Guyana | 1980s Memories
Who remembers going to school in Guyana with a slate in front of you and a little piece of chalk in your hand?
Before tablets, laptops, Wi-Fi, smartboards, and Google, many of us learned the basics the old-fashioned way:
A-B-C... 1-2-3... multiplication tables... reading... writing... arithmetic... and plenty repetition! 😄
“Slate and Chalk” is an original nostalgic Guyanese song celebrating those unforgettable school days of growing up in Guyana during the 1980s—when classrooms were simple, wooden desks were shared, blackboards were covered with lessons, and a small piece of chalk could help us begin writing our future.
Make a mistake?
Wipe de slate clean and try again!
Forget your chalk?
Your friend might break theirs in half and share it with you. ❤️
And when Teacher started walking down the aisle checking everybody's work, suddenly the whole classroom got quiet! 😂
“What yuh get for six times eight?”
“Forty-eight!”
“Yuh sure?”
“Every time!” 😄
From multiplication tables and spelling lessons to reading aloud and waiting impatiently for the school bell to ring for recess, these were ordinary moments that became lifelong memories.
Outside, we couldn't wait to run into the schoolyard, play cricket with a tennis ball, laugh with our friends, and enjoy those precious few minutes before the bell called us back inside.
🎶 “Slate and Chalk” brings these memories to life with an upbeat Indo-Caribbean Chutney Soca sound, featuring male and female vocals, playful call-and-response, tassa, dholak, dhantal, harmonium, steelpan, Caribbean bass, Soca drums, and rhythmic DJ vocal scratching.
But underneath the fun is something important.
Those classrooms may not have had today's technology, but they gave us teachers who taught us, friends who shared with us, discipline, determination, and lessons that followed us throughout life.
Every time we wiped that slate clean and tried again, we were learning something bigger than arithmetic:
Don't give up. Correct your mistake. Try again.
❤️ This song is dedicated to the teachers, students, parents, and families of Guyana who remember those simpler school days.

What village or town were you from?
And here's the big question:
Did you ever forget your chalk and have to borrow a piece from somebody? 😂
Share your memories in the comments. I especially want to hear from people who went to school in Berbice, Demerara, Essequibo, Georgetown, and villages throughout Guyana.
These stories may seem small, but together they preserve an important part of Guyanese childhood, education, and culture for future generations.

🇬🇾📚❤️ Before tablets, we had a slate. Before smartboards, we had a blackboard. Before the internet could give us an answer, Teacher made sure we learned how to find it ourselves.
Wipe it clean. Pick up de chalk. Try again.
