Durham Cathedral's full name is The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham — but of its three dedicatees, only one actually determined where the cathedral stands, what it was built for, and why a city grew up around it. This video tells the story of St Cuthbert: a 7th-century shepherd boy turned monk-bishop who became the most revered saint in northern England. It covers his life on the windswept Farne Islands, the extraordinary discovery of his incorrupt body in 698, and the 120-year odyssey of the monks who carried his coffin across Northumbria to escape the Viking raids — until a vision, a milkmaid, and a lost brown cow brought them to a rocky peninsula on the River Wear. That peninsula is Durham. And the Norman cathedral Bishop William of St Calais began there in 1093 was built, explicitly, as a reliquary for one man's remains. Cuthbert's shrine survived for four centuries as one of the greatest pilgrimage sites in medieval England — until Henry VIII's commissioners arrived in 1539, stripped it bare, and found, to their unease, a body still whole after 850 years. He was quietly reburied under a stone slab marked Cuthbertus. He is still there.
