On the first of August, 2023, it became illegal to sell an ordinary incandescent light bulb in the United States of America.
The same bulb Thomas Edison commercialised in New Jersey in 1879. The same bulb that lit every American home for a hundred and forty years. The one your parents bought in packs of four without thinking about it, the one you replaced in a lamp on a Sunday afternoon, the one that gets warm and glows yellow and burns out after about a year.
You cannot buy one now. Not the standard household kind.
And here is the part that makes this story worth twenty minutes of your time.
Nobody ever voted to ban it.
There is no Act of Congress titled the Incandescent Light Bulb Prohibition Act. No president signed a bill banning Edison's bulb. No member of the House or Senate ever cast a vote on the question of whether Americans should be allowed to buy one. You cannot look up the roll call, because the roll call does not exist.
Legal Until documents the American freedoms that quietly disappeared. Every video takes one thing Americans could once legally do, and traces the exact law, the exact date, and the decision that ended it. Names, dates, statute numbers, and what is left today.
