逢川 と 哀愁の漁師町（熊野古道伊勢路）│ A Melancholic Fishing Village - Along the Kumano Kodo Trail

日本列島は絶え間なく自然災害にさらされていますが、その最たるものはやはり地震と津波でしょう。昨今警戒されている東南海地震においては、過去100～200年周期で繰り返しており、その都度、人々の記憶から遠のいた頃に大災害をもたらしています。今回訪れた三重県熊野市の二木島という小さな限界漁村は古くから津波の被害を繰り返し、2011年に起こった東日本大震災をきっかけに改めて地域や行政で災害を強く意識されるようになりました。二木島はかつて捕鯨の拠点にもなっていた漁業が住民生活を支えた小さな漁村ですが、漁業の衰退とともに現在はとても静かで寂れた港町となっています。日本の漁業の衰退はいろんな要因があるかと思いますが、やはり漁業に関する法律がかなり曖昧かつ適当であることにも一つの要因があるかと思います。しかし、それ以上に住民の心を折れさせたのが「津波」であったことも想像できます。当時、そんな彼らに出来ることと言えば「神様に祈る」ことしかなかったことと思います。この二木島は熊野と伊勢を繋ぐ巡礼路の道中に位置し、集落の裏山から二木島湾に流れる「逢川」の名前は「伊勢と熊野の神々が出逢う場所」という言い伝えに由来するといいます。事実、現代でも自然災害については「祈る」より他ない、というのが現実であり、神々の聖地へと向かう巡礼路がこの小さな漁師町を通過しているのも、そういうことなのでしょう。 It is well known that Japan is prone to earthquakes; however, residents in certain areas—particularly along the Pacific coast—must remain vigilant against the threat of major earthquakes and tsunamis in the future. The small port town of Nigishima in Mie Prefecture, which I visited recently, is one such place that has suffered repeated tsunami damage throughout its history. While the town has declined alongside the waning fishing industry, "earthquakes and tsunamis" are another reason why people have left. In the past, the only way for residents to protect themselves from natural disasters was to pray to the gods of nature. The fact that this town lies along a pilgrimage route leading to sacred sites dedicated to the gods suggests just how deep-rooted that faith was. #熊野古道伊勢路 #漁師町 #山歩き #それでも川は流れる
