Word Study Level J, Lesson 10: r-controlled vowel "or"

In this video, I use a Make-A-Big-Word activity to teach students to use magnetic letters or letter cards to make a big word. Specially, students learn to spell words containing the r-controlled vowel or. This is a great lesson for 1st - 4th grade elementary students learning to read and spell, as well as for older ESL learners. This lesson can be used for whole class instruction, small groups, and even be posted to Google Classroom as a reading workshop activity for independent students. It's also great for homeschooling families. A quick reference to leveling: Levels A - D: Kindergarten Levels C - I: First Grade Levels J - M: Second Grade Levels N - P: Third Grade Levels Q - R: Fourth Grade Levels S - U: Fifth Grade Levels V - Y: Sixth Grade Level Z: Seventh Grade Note: Be aware that these are developmental reading/spelling stages, so each child progress through the levels at different rates. Especially at early grades, it is natural to see overlap or discrepancy of developmental vs. chronological age. For English learners, it also depends on language acquisition.
